In 1979 Steve Marriott joined forces with Dallas Hodge in Santa Cruz. Dallas convinced Steve to use his band, The Deluxe Band, from Detroit. I was in the band (the only California boy) at the time and did the sax solo in this song. I remember one night at around three in the morning, after doing a gig in Half Moon Bay, we received a phone call to the band's apartment. George told me Steve wanted me in the studio "right now". Steve had an idea to put sax on the tune "Infatuation" (which bumped George's guitar solo, sorry) and he didn't want to wait. He wanted the solo to be mean and nasty. John Wright, Steve's engineer, even ran a feed through an old Princeton guitar amp for effect. This is the original recording for the purpose of a demo. Later we added trumpet for the horn lines with the help of my long time buddy Robin Anderson. A month or so later Steve asked me to put the solo on the new Humble Pie album being recorded at a studio in Modesto. I was horrified to find the ! basic track was recorded at a much slower tempo so my old solo would not work. John Wright and I came up with a new, funkier solo that worked. Unfortunately Steve the Humble Pie members decided the tempo was wrong and had to redo the whole song in New York where a studio sax player in town did the solo that went onto the final record. Still, the experience of playing with one of the best vocals in rock and roll history and all the antics of working with an English super star is one I will always ...
